Co-located by an Oblate parish outside Durban, Sukumawenze ("Place of Care" / "MaterChristiHome") provides food for children before and after circumstance, hospice care for young people with AIDS and training to help young people gain employment.
Sukumawenze is based in Inanda New Town and staffed by two religious sisters with the help of the local Oblate and volunteers. The mission is primarily one of presence, care and love.
Each morning and lunchtime over 50 young children are fed at the centre before and after school, due to either the illness or disappearance of their parents.
A small hospice at the center enables young people who have been discharged from hospital with AIDS to await death in the care and love of those who serve them.
Two workshops at the center provide training for young people in the basic skills of computer literacy and tailoring, which should empower them with the skills they need to find employment.
