Oblate Youth Service

At Home
Projects at Home Print E-mail

The Goals of the Oblate Youth Service (OYS) enshrine within the group an ongoing commitment to service others and a desire to evolve, progress and grow as a group. Consequently activities we maintain an active programme at home, in Ireland and the UK, that include:

  • Kids’ club - Members Involvement of in the ‘kids club’ based in St Michaels in Inchicore. This club meets every Wednesday from September to June, for children 8-12 years of age who have need of the services that the club provides.
  • Fund raising – Ongoing fund raising activities and social reunions enable the work of the OYS to continue at home and its sponsored projects in Africa in a small way financially and through the active participation of some of the members.
  • Work placements – Through the Oblate family members are able to undertake short-term placements for a few weeks of month working with the poor and sick either at home or abroad.
  • Reunions for Lourdes guests – An annual reunion enables us to come together with our invalids (guests) after the pilgrimage to have a day of activities and to renew friendships made while away together.
  • Ongoing support for Lourdes guests – Whilst the Lourdes pilgrimage lasts a week, our relationship for our guests continues beyond those five days with many members maintain regular contact with guests, visiting them and provide ongoing support.
  • Group development – We undertake to develop the OYS spiritually and socially through activities that help the group understand and fulfil the work that it provides to undertake. This is developed through the work of the OYS Executive, which is made up of members of the group to which it is accountable.
  • Personal development – We organise activities to enable ourselves to develop our personal social awareness to come to a better understanding of what is happening around us in the area of justice, peace and respect for all that is at the heart of being human based on the values of the gospel.
  • Spreading the Oblate message – Each year OYS members work with the Oblates over a weekend in 5 or 6 non-Oblate parishes to promote the work and ministry of the Oblates.
  • Social gatherings – We are developing gatherings for young people in Oblate parishes and centres.

We came together as Oblate Youth Service (OYS) members of a few years’ standing from different parts of Britain and Ireland to look back at the mission statement and goals of our organisation which were put to paper last May; and to look forward, putting flesh on those goals and charting the development of the Service.

Inchicore Kid's Club, Dublin 2008

I have to admit to being a bit nervous in the beginning, but I soon got into the mix of things…. It’s a very different experience to the one you get with the youth service working in Lourdes, but it is just as rewarding.

L’Arche Community, Canada

I learnt many things that university couldn’t teach me. I felt that my faith more of a base of its own through my time at L’Arche. It gave me a lot of time also to reflect on where I would like my life to go. I learned how to work better with others, to control myself, to enjoy time that I spent with other people.
